Strengthening Board Leadership of Social Movements is a practical online course developed by Social Movement Lab for board members of (international) social movements, grassroots groups, civil society organisations, and networks of changemakers. It addresses a core challenge: how do you stay on course as a movement grows, faces pressure, or deals with political headwinds?
The course consists of five compact online evening sessions, combining live intervision, reflection and exercises with self-study, all focused on real behavioural change. It’s designed for board members who want to strengthen their leadership and strategy, exchange experiences with peers at home and abroad, get a better grip on structure and meetings, balance bottom-up energy with governance responsibility, and develop themselves and their movement sustainably.
The five sessions cover:
- Mission & Strategy – formulating vision and mission, setting priorities, values as a compass, long-term thinking, and stakeholders
- The Role of the Board – the board’s unique role, tasks and responsibilities, balancing direction with bottom-up energy
- Structure & Effective Meetings – governance models (traditional vs. horizontal), impactful agendas, results-driven meetings
- Bottom-up Organising – engaging volunteers and staff, giving space while setting boundaries, conflict management
- Leadership & Self-care – boundaries, power and vulnerability, personal learning goals, burnout prevention
An optional follow-up intervision session takes place one month after the final session.
What you take away: strategies to stay on course under growth and pressure, a direct network of fellow board members from the Netherlands and abroad, insight into board roles, models and practical meeting techniques, a framework for leading and engaging staff and volunteers, tools for conflict management and continuity, and a personal plan for healthy, sustainable leadership.
